My daughter Emma designs and makes costumes and has worked on blockbuster films including Warhorse, Gaurdians of the Galaxy, Murder on the Orient Express etc. She has worked with many famous film stars and producers, mainly operating from film studios. However her dream is to run her own business working from home like me to keep the overheads down. I designed her a basic insulated timber framed 4m square 'box' to go at the end of her garden. Cost needed to be kept low so we built it ourselves, starting with a basic concrete slab. Thin insulated timber walls were ply finished except the front which was finished with larch battens. There are fences each side and to the rear so we installed a Velux Curved skylight central to the fibreglass finished flat roof, with blind and rain sensor to create and control good natural lighting and ventilation. The total cost was around £12,000, though if we had paid someone else to build it the total would have been nearer £30,000. This sort of outbuilding can be a useful cost-effective addition to many properties and can often be done within the confines of Permitted Development.
