Somner Macdonald Architects
We first visited this house with the clients when they were about to put an offer in to purchase. We could see the potential, they were daunted. This three-storey semi detached villa is one of two pairs. To the rear of the property, and occupying a significant portion of the rear garden, was an original stone offshoot with a hipped slate roof. The kitchen was a small, dark separate space. We proposed removing this offshoot in order to create a new opening between the main house and garden; and introducing new roof-lights to the north and east pitched roof faces. Through the winter, we designed, they almost froze. Come the Spring, and after working through a tricky planning process and managing a tight budget we started work. We added new velux windows, removed the rear offshoot and fitted new rear glazed doors. From start to finish this project epitomised a positive two-way relationship between client and architect. We enjoyed the process, we hope they enjoy the house every bit as much.
