Full refurbishment of the grade ‘A’ listed building, the provision of offices for MHA, pre-let office space and new external works to include car and cycle parking. Parts of the building have been offered for community use including the new mezzanine floor housing the Dalkeith History Society museum.

The main architectural objective was to deliver a contemporary, flexible and diverse working environment significantly enhanced by the impressive internal volume of the market hall. To this end, new ground level openings were carefully punctured through the North Elevation to provide natural ventilation, daylight and access to the car park. Equally important, two new large format rooflights were installed in addition to the existing asymmetric rooflights to achieve a more balanced distribution of natural light but also to provide indirect light within the museum space. The required solar control is offered through the inclusion of automated blinds. An additional roof window was installed to provide access, through the pitched roof, to the historic bell tower on the front elevation.
