Large side extension and internal remodelling. This exciting contemporary extension is located on excess side garden land at a Victorian house within the lovely town of Faversham. It comprises a very large family room which is opened up to the kitchen, with kitchen layout and fittings being replaced to respond to the new space. One of the key features of the scheme is its gull-wing roof, which in some ways is counter-intuitive, and provocative in its contemporary design. This certainly is not background architecture which seeks to fit in, and initially did not find favour with the planners or many locals. The pitch of the gull-wing roof is carried through internally, with the high level open ceiling or "skeiling" creating an amazing feeling of spaciousness and allowing light to flood in from many the many windows, including high-level clerestorey glazing, the rooflights, and the bi-fold doors. The project also incorporates a new entrance, a large lobby area with space for shoes and coats, and a new generous ground-floor WC. The project meets all the client's operational/programme requirements and has done so in an innovative, coherent, high quality way: the essence of architecture.
