House Extension, Main Street, Newburgh
Newburgh, Aberdeenshire

DMA were commissioned to design a modern rear extension to a traditional two storey granite dwelling, where an existing lean-to conservatory and utility were to be removed. In their place a new kitchen, utility and shower room were constructed. Internal alterations also opened up the house from front to rear at ground floor level.

For the new extension a mono-pitch roof form was derived from a requirement to retain an existing stained glass feature window at first floor level, creating a simple dynamic profile to the roof. It is complemented by a projecting Velux® rooflight, which is tilted 45 degrees to face due south and acts as a light funnel gathering direct sunlight deep into the floorplan.

The green roof of the extension is finished in a sedum mat and the walls are clad in a Kebony® hardwood. Glazing is maximised to the east-facing garden elevation.
